The mission of the Greater Gaspé Salmon Foundation
Since 1998, the foundation’s mission has been to raise and manage the funds to be invested in the preservation and development of the salmon stocks in the rivers of Gaspé. The foundation is able to achieve its mission by means of the donations and profits earned at the annual fundraising dinner.
Our achievements at Greater Gaspé Salmon Foundation
We have invested almost $500 000 in conservation and educational programs since 1998.
- For the last three years the Foundation has financially supported a research project run by the research centre at l’Institut national de la recherche scientifique on the three Gaspe rivers. The project will give us access to a clear, up-to-date picture of areas available to the salmon for spawning and feeding in the three rivers. It will also allow us to determine the role played by the tributaries in river productivity. The results may be used by the management to determine which zones are the most productive, thus providing them with improved protection. Consequently, we should be able to identify vulnerable zones to increase productivity.
- The Foundation has made a significant contribution to dismantling the log jam on the Saint John River.
- For nearly 15 years, the Foundation has contributed to installing an educational program “The Salmon Story” for children in most of Greater Gaspe primary schools.
